The Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) is a new international index certifying the overall UV protection provided by a lens. It is an objective rating system developed by Essilor International which can rate any lens for daily eyewear as well as for sunglasses.
With the Eye-Sun Protection Factor, you can now compare the levels of UV protection provided by all kinds of eyewear, including clear, photochromic, and sun lenses (tinted or polarized). Ask your Eye-Care Professional for advice.
Visit the E-SPF website for more information
And last but not least, protects your children’s eye’s!
According to this website:
80% of all UV exposure occurs before the age of 18 !
Avoid sun exposure during the sun’s peak hours. Explain the “shadow rule” to your kids: short shadows = seek shade. When shadows are shorter than objects throwing them, they should avoid direct sunlight.
Teach your kids good sun protection habits. For their outdoors activities, always cover them up with clothing + a broad-brimmed hat + sunscreen + UV protective sunglasses.
Children need protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays whenever they’re outdoors. Not only in full sunlight. UV rays are invisible and insidious : they can come through the clouds, reflect on the sand, or demultiplicate on the water. Don’t forget to protect your children’s eyes and skin everyday.
Infants under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun as much as possible. Their skin is not yet protected by melanin and their eyes are particularly fragile.
For their skin, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. For their eyes, make sure their eyeglasses filter both UVB and UVA rays. In summer, choose sunglasses that wrap around for maximum protection. On corrective glasses, look for the best UV protection. Ask your eye-care professional about E-SPF.

We now offer Macula Risk Genetic Testing in our office. If you have been diagnosed with the beginning signs of macular degeneration, this test can give us vital statistics to predict how this disease will effect your vision. Then we can create a care plan individually tailored to your visual needs. Most insurances in the state of Florida will pay for this test, and you only have to have it done one time.
