Myopia Control toolbox

At Maggiore Family Eye Care we have a toolbox of options to help slow the progression of myopia or nearsightedness.

The first step to finding out which tools will work best for your family is to schedule a myopia consult with one of our doctors. At this visit we will look at the child’s prescription, the shape of the front of their eye (topography), and the length of their eyes (biometry). We will discuss the child’s lifestyle and activities with their family.

What options are available?

Stellest lenses

Stellest lenses are eyeglass lenses that help to slow the progression of nearsightedness. This is a great option for younger children that are not ready for contact lenses yet. They are also a great back up option for kids who do wear contacts.

MiSight Contact Lenses

MiSight contact lenses are a daily disposable soft contact lens. These are a great option for kids who are active and don’t want glasses getting in the way.

Ortho-K

Orthokeratology contact lenses are hard lenses that gently changes the shape of the cornea while you sleep. So you sleep in the lenses and when you wake up, you take them out and can see without glasses or contacts during the day. This is a great option for kids who are swimmers and for someone with sensitive or dry eyes.

Atropine drops

Low dose atropine drops, one drop in each eye at bedtime, can help slow the progression of myopia. They are easy to install and do not sting. These can be used alone, or in combination with one of the other treatments if needed.

So which option is best?

Well, that answer is different for every family. We will look at the options together and make a plan that works best for the child and their family. Once treatment has begun we will follow up with the child during the year to check for changes or progression, to make sure the treatment plan is working, or if adjustments are needed. We will monitor by watching both the child’s prescription and their biometry.
